Green Schools Campaign

LEAD THE WAY IN BUILDING A CLIMATE JUST FUTURE FOR ALL.

SHARE

Fighting the climate crisis is going to require all hands on deck, from every sector – including education. In the United States, K-12 schools are some of the most significant emitters of greenhouse gases and spend enormous amounts of money on energy.

An analysis of US Department of Energy data found that annually schools are collectively spending $8 billion on energy, and emit an estimated 72 million metric tons of carbon dioxide—equivalent to the output of 18 coal plants, or more than 8 million homes.

The Green Schools Campaign centers developing the leadership, advocacy, and grassroots organizing of young people to spearhead initiatives to transition their schools and communities to 100% clean energy.

As major emitters, schools hold significant potential in curbing global emissions and inspiring other institutions to do the same with students and young people leading the charge.

Whether you are an experienced organizer or a first-time activist, Green Schools Campaign is training and mobilizing the next generation of leaders calling for and implementing the energy transition we need for a safe and just future for all.

About Us & History

The idea for Green Schools Campaign was first developed in early 2020 by Climate Reality Leaders Simon Aron, Michael Zelniker, Sybil Azur, and Calum Worthy, following their successful campaign with the Climate Reality Los Angeles chapter to commit the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest school district in the United States, and Los Angeles Community College District to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2040.

Green Schools Campaign was then launched in August of 2020 by Ava Acevedo, Natalia Armenta, Simon Aron, and Lily Morse, who met at the Climate Reality Leadership Corps Global virtual training in July 2020. Since then, Green Schools Campaign has worked with students across the United States to lead the change in their communities.
